What Is Local Dimming?

When it comes to televisions, there are a few key features that consumers look out for: picture quality, size, and price. Of these, the picture quality is often thought to be the most important. And one of the ways manufacturers improve picture quality is by using local dimming.

But what is local dimming? In short, the local dimming is a feature that allows a television to control the brightness of different parts of the screen independently. This means that if you’re watching a scene with a lot of dark areas and bright areas, the television can make sure that the dark areas are not too bright and the bright areas are not too dark.

This is done by controlling the backlight of the television. The backlight is the light that shines behind the screen and makes it glow.

How does it work?

LED TVs use a technology called “local dimming” to improve image quality. This technology adjusts the brightness of different parts of the screen depending on what is being shown. For example, if a dark scene is playing, the TV will make the dark areas darker and the bright areas brighter. This makes the image look more realistic and eliminates the “halo” effect that is common with LED TVs. There are two different types of LED backlights: edge-lit and direct-lit.

Edge-lit LED TVs to have a light that can be turned on or off.

Direct-lit LED TVs have multiple LEDs positioned behind the screen.

LED TVs are more energy efficient than older technologies because of their ability to turn off unused pixels when not in use and their ability to change the brightness of pixels depending on what is being shown.

Advantages of Local Dimming

Local dimming is a feature on some LED and LCD TVs that improves image quality by adjusting the brightness of different parts of the screen. This feature is also known as “zone dimming” or “local area dimming.”

When local dimming is turned on, the TV divides the screen into a number of zones. The TV then adjusts the brightness of each zone depending on what is happening in that zone. For example, if a bright scene is playing in one part of the screen, the TV will darken the other parts of the screen to create a more realistic image.

Local dimming can improve image quality in two ways. First, it can improve the contrast ratio. The contrast ratio is a measure of how well a TV can show different levels of darkness and lightness. Second, it can improve black levels.

Local dimming works on a per-zone basis. For example, if you have two zones on your TV with local dimming, you might set the TV to turn off one zone in certain scenes that do not need as much contrast.

It is important to note that these zones should not be confused with a backlight, which is the light source in the LCD panel. The backlight can be dimmed on a per-zone basis, but it cannot be turned off completely.

Disadvantages of Local Dimming

There are several disadvantages of local dimming. First, when the backlight is turned off in a small portion of the screen, that area will be very dark. This can be distracting and make it difficult to see what’s on the screen. Second, because the backlight is turned off in specific areas, image quality can suffer. This is because black pixels will appear brighter than they should, and colors may not be as accurate as they should be. Third, local dimming can sometimes cause image artifacts, which are visual distortions that can be distracting or cause eyestrain. Finally, the local dimming can also decrease battery life since the backlight has to be turned on more often.

What Constitutes Good Local Dimming?

When it comes to televisions, the local dimming is a feature that allows the television to adjust the brightness of different areas of the screen independently. This results in a much better picture because it avoids the issue of blooming where bright objects onscreen can bleed into surrounding dark areas. It’s not surprising that this feature is so popular because it can make a huge difference in picture quality.

It’s not surprising that the local dimming is so popular as it can make such a big difference in picture quality. However, it does come at a price and has its negatives, but if you have the budget to invest then definitely give this feature a shot.
